I've always loved Dinah, remember her tv show fondly, but there's just one thing. (And I hope this isn't blasphemy) but I just can't stand her singing.

What is the attraction? I've never liked her singing voice, and I played this with an open mind, but -- ugh.

She was a great lady, though.

Frankie: I sort of posted this one for the 'camp' value. I think Dinah used to be a truly great singer, but in the 40s and 50s. For a good example watch this:

In the 70s she'd pretty much lost most of her range, and on her show just sang some of the worst songs. The talk show ruined her reputation as a singer because all people remember her for was the talk show.

Poor Jane Russell seems to have had a little cold there or something...

My favorite Dinah memory was the show where she sang "Last Dance." No, really. She did. My mom, who loved Dinah as much as I did, called me from the next room, saying "Oh my God, get it here, you've gotta see this! It's awful!)

Yeah, it's a shame that most people who didn't see her show when it aired live in the 50s remember her this way. Her taped shows never had the energy of the live ones - and why would they? By this point, she had been cranking out 5 of these bad boys a week for like 7 years... but she was such a charmer - and by all accounts a really sweet soul. I loved the story Sinatra told about when all the Rat Pack boys would close the bars in Beverly Hills they'd all wander over to Dinah's house and hang out and she'd cook and make everybody drinks.

She was the classiest dame ever! I giggled a little at the singing (mainly because the genre of songs, like "Last Dance," were so incongruous for her), but always enjoyed her interactions with guests. They truly mutually loved one another.
